Xewkija is Gozo's fourth largest community yet they have made themselves
known by building the biggest church. The Xewkija Rotunda Church is
believed to be the third largest unsupported church dome in Europe and
bigger then the Mosta Dome in Malta. Work was started in 1952 and was
based on the designs of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. The whole of
this project was funded by the population of 3000 people and by Xewkijans
abroad. It was also built using willing local labour.
