Pjazza
San Gorg is a smaller square that is situated just behind the main
square. Dominating this square is the St. Georges Basilica. Originally built
in 1678, it has had much added on to it and the main façade was rebuilt
in 1818. The decorated dome is believed to have been completed along with
its paintings between 1949 and 1964. The impressive bronze altar is a replica
of Bermini's in St Peter's, Rome. To the centre is the main alter piece of
a triumphant St George which was painted by Mattia Preti (1613-99) whom was
also known for his work on Valletta Cathedral. Filtering off behind St Georges
is Il Borgo, the old part of town that is full of mazy little streets and
alleys. Specifically designed this way to baffle invaders and deflect the
flight of arrows and shot, the area is a magnificent example of medieval Malta.
Going
back across Republic Street and on the corner, before the walk up the hill
to the Citadel is the Citadel theatre showing Gozo 360 Degrees. Here spectators
can see the history, geography and story of Gozo, in a similar way that the
Malta Experience does for the main island.
