Comino is a very small island on the way to the island of Gozo. The island is only 3.5 km square and is the perfect place to getaway from the hustle and bustle in Malta or Gozo. Its name is taken from the cumin herb which was once harvested on the island. Comino is very popular with both people undertaking water sports or diving.
For those trying to have a relaxing afternoon then Comino has the Blue Lagoon to offer. The Blue Lagoon is simply amazing and the best place to swim within the whole of the Maltese islands. It is so popular due to the simply breathtaking colour of the seabed and water and due to the sheltered position it has. This ensures no tide is present and swimming is very relaxed in the lagoon. To get to the Blue Lagoon you can catch a boat from the North of Malta. The boat goes from where you can catch the Gozo ferry. The Lagoon is also very popular for snorkling due to the water being so clear. Many tourists and Maltese dedicate a day to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. They use the desert island as a needed rest day during their vacation or from the spered of life in general. As the sun sets Comino really does live up to its expectations. The Island also holds many superb dive sites as mentioned in our diving guide.
Comino has an amazing past. So many different people have been in control of the little island and they have all had different uses for it. During the Roman period it was inhabited, but did not have much significance until the Knights arrived. In this period it was used for both hunting and recreational purposes. The island was also a vital defensive position against invaders especially against the Ottoman Turks. The St Mary s Fort was built by the Knights in 1618, a landmark for miles around. Over the years Comino has proved a useful base for pirates operating in the central Mediterranean. Over the time the Knights also built a small chapel on Comino, which was situated at St Mary s Bay. In modern times the only role for Comino has been with the tourist industry and the trips to the Blue Lagoon.
